The Arch KRGT-1 gets EPA/CARB approval

Arch Motorcycle, the "ultra-premium" American V-twin manufacturer co-founded by Gard Hollinger of LA County ChopRods fame with Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves, has had its first production model certified as emissions compliant by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) in the United States.

This means that their KRGT-1 is now road-legal for sale in all 50 states.
Powered by a proprietary S&S Cycle T124 Twin Cam style 124 ci/2,032cc 45 degree downdraft, fuel injected V-twin, Arch Motorcycle is no "celeb-fest" boutique bike building ego trip - this is serious contemporary production V-twin motorcycle design and engineering from the top drawer. With the help of S&S Cycle and other collaborators, Arch Motorcycle is doing it, and doing it right.
Ever since its unveiling last year, the KRGT-1 (the first of a series of designs) has won admirers with all who have ridden it; indeed with up to 100 planned for production, although the $78,000 price tag places the bike outside of mainstream consideration, it is far from excessive for the quality and originality that Hollinger and Reeves' decade long collaboration has produced. Be under no illusion - the KRGT-1 is an achievement worthy of recognition.

Working in conjunction with S&S Cycle, Arch have developed a new downdraft induction system that is positioned between the two halves of the "fuel cells" (gas tanks to you and me).
"Shaped and efficient" intake air dams collect and deliver the air, and the multi-function design allows the dams to support the frame and the billet aluminum headlight housing.
Each of the two halves of the gas tank have no less than 66 hours of machining in it (!) to reduce 534 lbs of aluminum to two 9 lb 'cells', which are then custom-finished and joined. The right 'cell' interior has been designed and reinforced to act as an aluminum structural chassis member - with the entire Arch downdraft system contained between the two 'cell' chambers and the tube and billet steel frame.

A multi-functional oil pan/transmission mount and a cross-member/battery tray have been designed in-house and made, in the company's own words, "by carefully chosen outsource partners". S&S have also collaborated to develop the Arch "Unitized" drivetrain - a compact unit that is said to provide a "strong, serviceable, proprietary system that streamlines and balances" the KRGT-1.
An Arch "cove reflective taillight embodies design elements that challenge expectation - the multi-function LED unit sits inverted and hidden within the reflective aluminum rear cowling, eliminating the need for traditional plastic lensing.
"The Arch modular billet aluminum swingarm requires over 17 hours of machining. Hidden behind its strong sculpted exterior, pocketing and wire channels reduce weight by 55 percent. Titanium adjusters and a hollow chromoly axle complete the assembly."
Front suspension is a 43mm fully adjustable Ohlins inverted set-up with a fully adjustable piggy-back reservoir Race Tech single shock with hydraulic preload adjustment at the rear.

Customer options include 2" or 3" handlebar pull-back risers, narrow or wide mounted footpegs and forward or mid controls in a "limitless array of unique finishes" - over 200 parts for the KRGT-1 are said to be being manufactured in-house.
The transmission is an Arch proprietary 6-speed with custom compact high torque main shaft, and an Arch Bandit dry belt with compact clutch basket with a right side 530 O-ring chain final drive.
The wheels are ultra-light BST South African manufactured carbon fiber items - 3"x19" front, 8"x19" rear; the brakes are Swedish made ISR 6-piston monoblock radial mount calipers with dual ISR floating dampened discs.
The KRGT-1 weighs in at 538 lbs dry and has a 5-US gallon tank for a range of around 200 miles, a 68" wheelbase, 30 degrees of rake, 5" of trail and 27.8" seat height.
Historically, not every bike offered in this price range has warranted the ticket; indeed there are plenty who would argue that short of the rarefied air of the MotoGP paddock, no bike warrants this kind of price tag, especially in a post-Lehman custom motorcycle market characterized by garage-builds, and a long overdue return to "roots".
However, there will always be top-end projects, regardless of the economic and build cycle, and in the Arch KRGT-1 the market has a motorcycle that is aspirational and innovative in equal measure - the craftsmanship, styling and engineering screams "ride me", not just "own me".



Kuryakyn Road Thunder audio by MTX

Kuryakyn has announced its partnership with MTX Audio of the MiTek Electronics and Communications Group. The all-new RoadThunder by MTX line is a collection of high-performance motorcycle audio products that will be available exclusively through the Somerset, Wisconsin based parts and accessory specialist.
Unveiled at the V-Twin Expo, the Kuryakyn RoadThunder by MTX series "showcases MTX’s proven audio knowledge and innovation alongside Kuryakyn’s aesthetic motorcycle design and styling expertise, said Kuryakyn VP of Brand Management Steve Veltri.
Initial products in the line will include handlebar-mount, self-amplified sound bars and 3-inch speaker pods that deliver "powerful, distortion-free sound" with universal mounting for bars sized 7/8” to 1-1/4” in diameter. Slip-ons for Baggers and Trikes

Aeromach USA

"Cruisin' Peg" styles

Aeromach USA, of Charlotte, N.C., is now shipping its patented "Cruisin' Pegs" for stock Harley-Davidson motorcycles using the Half Moon and tapered footboards - they are designed to mount to the bottom of stock footboards. 

"Aeromach has been manufacturing billet motorcycle accessories in the US since 1999, and feedback from Harley riders convinced us that there is demand for these additional design versions," says Paul Aiken, owner of Aeromach. Machined from T6-6061 aircraft quality billet aluminum, the arms are adjustable in three positions for optimal rider comfort and available in either Flame, smooth or ball milled finish. All the required hardware is supplied in stainless steel.



Bolt-on stretch kits

Spearfish, South Dakota based Baggster is offering what it says are the first ever bolt-on custom conversions for creating the stretched look on stock FLH tanks and bags.

All of the components are said to bolt-on with no trimming, shaping, gluing or drilling, and come ready to prep for painting and are made of injection molded polyurethane.
In addition to these FLH tank and side panel Speed stretch kits, Baggster also offers custom bagger kit options for Sportster, Softail and Dyna models.

'Road Rage' III 2-into-1 with stepped headers

Bassani Xhaust has announced a significant upgrade to its 'Road Rage' 2-into-1 complete exhaust systems for 1991-2016 Dyna models.

The equal length header pipes step from 1 3/4" to 1 7/8" and use an "advanced merge collector design that is proven to maximize performance", according to the company.
Hand-TIG welded 304 stainless steel construction is said to make this a robust and durable system. It ships with 18mm ports with 12mm adapters and plugs, and features a brushed finish, a partial heat shield, which allows for better ground clearance, which means the head pipes can be brought up more under the (mid or forward) controls, and an aggressive short upswept megaphone with removable baffle and end cap is said to "provide Dyna riders with the kind of power and performance" they want.



Driveline upgrade for FXR and Tourers


Paughco has designed this unique "5-speed swingarm upgrade kit" for use on popular FXR and touring models. Firmly established as precision manufacturers and innovative designers, Gilbert, Arizona based Precision Billet is extending its diverse offering with a complete line-up of new luxury grips.

The new grips integrate their most popular design styles while leaving room for customization by allowing the customer to choose the end cap inlay. Mooneyes Cole Foster headlight
Designed by Cole Foster of Salinas Boyz Custom fame, this Mooneyes headlight is made from the same high quality polished aluminum as Mooneyes popular oil tanks. It has a smooth shape cone body. A sturdy 1/2" bracket allows for mounting to just about any location. They are 140 mm long, with a 12V 4 1/2" sealed beam insert and a mounting block.


EMD "Vitamin A" headlight housing
These French made cast aluminum headlamp shells with distinctive triple grooves accept late style OEM 5-3/4" inserts and matching bezels (aftermarket inserts require a rubber spacing ring). Cast-in mounting tabs are spaced at 3/4" (19 mm). The length is 115mm for 5-3/4" headlight insert. They are available in bare or dull black.

"Reverb" vintage-style ignition wire
These cotton-braided 16-gauge spark plug wires with vintage herringbone design feature a modern PVC insulation and stranded copper core. W&W say that copper core wires should not be used with electronic ignitions other than Dyna "S" models. Available in 7mm diameter in black/white or olive drab/white.

Grimeca handlebar controls
These hard to find Italian made Grimeca handlebar controls offer a retro styling flavor with smaller pistons in the brake master cylinder (12 or 14mm), making them ideal for single disc applications. Made in aluminum and black/dull black powder-coat finish, they fit 1" handlebars.

The Gasbox battery tray Antigravity 12-Cell
This US made 151mm wide, 109mm high by 84mm deep universal battery carrier is laser-cut from 3mm steel and designed to securely custom-mount a 12-Cell Antigravity battery or any similar dimension unit.


Ronald grips
Designed to fit 1" bars with a 1-1/8" standard H-D throttle sleeve, these grips are made out of a special rubber material that is said to keep them soft, yet wear resistant - said to be a perfect match for Pangea Speed Elice footpegs. Available in black or white, they are 120mm long for handlebar controls up to 1974.


EMD Toy wheel covers
These two-piece wheel covers are made in France by EMD for 16" and 17" rims with spokes and disc or drum brake. Available bare or black powder-coated, they need mounting hardware and valve cut-outs.

Red Fox Dots and Reflectors
The tradition to use reflective ornaments goes back to the 1940s when they first appeared in H-D accessory catalogs. The Red Fox dots feature real glass lenses and are authentic reproductions of period parts. With their 4-tab rim they can be easily applied on saddlebags, leather or jeans jackets and such like - on hard surfaces they simply require drilling of a 15/16" (24 mm) hole.

They are also available as Smooth Dots, featuring a smooth lens surface and four mounting tabs on the lens rim.
As early as in the 1930s factory accessory catalogs showed decorative reflectors or jewels, which proved very popular for decades. You could place them almost everywhere on the bike to achieve that extra shine. The selection of Red Fox reflectors includes various types for multiple purposes, each in different colours. They are authentic reproductions of the period parts with real glass lenses and correct details. Indicated lengths are measured without stud.

They are available as Prism or Round reflectors and as original style or as improved reflectivity studded or saddlebag Glo-Brite reflectors.



Polaris reports first quarter motorcycle sales revenue +18 percent for first quarter

Polaris has announced that their first quarter 2016 North American retail unit sales increased 6 percent in the quarter with Indian Motorcycle up over 50 percent.
Motorcycle segment sales, including their respective PG&A related sales, increased 18 percent in the 2016 first quarter to $188.2 million "primarily due to continued strong retail sales for Indian motorcycles." 

Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated that "our first quarter results were in line with our projections ... our North American retail was +6 percent. During the quarter, we improved shipment lead-times and met retail demand from our Spirit Lake motorcycle facility"

North American consumer retail demand for the Polaris motorcycle segment, including Victory, Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot, "was up low-teens percent during the 2016 first quarter, while the overall motorcycle industry retail sales of 900cc and above was about flat in the 2016 first quarter."
During the 2016 first quarter, the company began retailing two new additions to its Victory and Indian Motorcycle line-up with the introduction of the Octane and the new Indian Springfield. Product availability for Victory, Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot "improved considerably" in the 2016 first quarter and dealer inventories "are essentially at targeted stocking levels at quarter-end."
First quarter net income was $46.9 million compared to $88.6 million in the first quarter of 2015, which is said to have been in line with company expectations. Total sales revenue for the first quarter 2016 was $983.0 million, down five percent compared to last year’s first quarter sales of $1,033.3 million.
Scott Wine, Polaris’ Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, stated that "our first quarter results were in line with our projections, in spite of increased expenses for warranty and product liability. Our Customer Excellence initiatives and new products drove a six percent increase in North American retail, and in conjunction with shipment reductions, better demand forecasting and process control improvements, enabled us to continue reducing dealer inventory levels year-over-year.
"During the quarter, we improved shipment lead-times, met retail demand from our Spirit Lake motorcycle facility, and completed the acquisition of Taylor-Dunn. I still believe 2016 is likely to be another volatile year in powersports, but we are seeing pockets of strength. The North American ORV industry was up in the first quarter, with March experiencing the strongest improvement. 

"We remain focused on an all-out assault on costs and re-dedicating the business to drive growth, not only for this year, but as part of a renewed commitment to achieving our 2020 objectives. The entire Polaris team is united, and determined, to grow sales and expand margins."
In terms of the 2016 business outlook, Polaris state that "while the powersports industry was slightly better than anticipated in the 2016 first quarter, the company is keeping its guidance range unchanged for the full year 2016, with earnings expected to be in the range of $6.20 to $6.80 per diluted share, with sales in the range of down two percent to up three percent due to the persistent unpredictability around overall economic trends and more specifically powersports industry trends for the remainder of 2016."
Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) and snowmobile segment sales, including their respective PG&A related sales, decreased nine percent from the first quarter of 2015 to $720.6 million. ORV vehicle sales decreased 12 percent, snowmobile vehicle sales were up two percent and ORV and snowmobile related PG&A sales, combined, increased two percent in the 2016 first quarter compared to the same period last year.

Global Adjacent Markets segment sales, along with their respective PG&A related sales, decreased five percent to $74.1 million in the 2016 first quarter compared to the 2015 first quarter. Work and Transportation group wholegood sales were up low single digit percent during the first quarter of 2016 primarily due to growth in the Aixam business. Sales for the company’s defense business were down significantly due to U.S. military budget spending patterns pushing orders into the future.
International sales to customers outside of North America totaled $162.6 million for the first quarter of 2016, including PG&A, up six percent from the same period in 2015. International sales on a constant currency basis were up 12 percent in the 2016 first quarter. Europe, Middle East and Africa ("EMEA") reported sales increased six percent in the 2016 first quarter and Asia Pacific reported sales were down seven percent, while Latin American reported sales were up 29 percent. International motorcycles segment sales were up 42 percent.
Gross profit decreased 16 percent to $247.6 million in the first quarter of 2016, compared to $293.7 million in the first quarter of 2015. As a percentage of sales, gross profit declined 324 basis points to 25.2 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2016, compared to 28.4 percent of sales for the same period last year. Negative currency movements, along with increased warranty and promotional costs and negative product mix, were partially offset by lower commodity costs and cost savings from product cost reduction efforts.
Operating expenses increased 20 percent to $189.9 million or 19.3 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2016, compared to $158.1 million or 15.3 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2015 - largely driven by increased research and development expense, higher selling and marketing spending and an increase in general and administrative expense due to higher product liability, severance and acquisition related costs incurred during the quarter.
The company’s debt-to-total capital ratio was 36 percent at March 31, 2016, compared to 27 percent a year ago. Cash and cash equivalents were $145.8 million at March 31, 2016, up from $111.0 million for the same period in 2015.
During the first quarter 2016, the company repurchased and retired 1,040,000 shares of its common stock for $84.9 million. As of March 31, 2016, the company currently has authorization from its Board of Directors to repurchase up to an additional 9.3 million shares of Polaris stock.
