Australian motorcycle market

Harley is Australian market share leader

Road-going motorcycle sales in Australia were 10,749 units in the third quarter of 2015, bringing the year-to-date total to 32,437, a +1.1 percent increase over the first nine months of 2014.
Australian trade association Chief Executive Tony Weber (FCIA) said Australians purchased 75,848 new motorcycles, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) and scooters between January and September 2015, down -2.5 percent in comparison to the same period in 2014.
“Road-going motorcycles accounted for 42.7 percent of the 75,848 sales. Off-road motorcycles for 32.2 percent of sales, ATVs for 19.8 percent and scooters for 5.3 percent.
“Harley-Davidson lead in market share terms, with 21 percent of total road-going motorcycle sales. They were followed by Honda with 16.7 percent of the market and followed by Yamaha with 15.4 percent.
“Yamaha was the leading brand in the off-road motorcycle market, selling 29.3 percent of the 24,429 off-road models. They were followed by Honda with 27 percent of sales and KTM with 16.3 percent. Total sales in this segment declined -6.3 percent, compared to January to September 2014.
“ATV sales for January to September 2015 increased +3.9 percent compared to the same period in 2014. Honda was the largest selling ATV manufacturer for this period, selling 28.7 percent of the total 14,995 ATVs sold; they were followed by Polaris with 24 percent of the ATV market and Yamaha with 18.2 percent.
Overall, Honda was the leading volume manufacturer between 1 January and 30 September 2015, with 22.5 percent (17,085) of motorcycle, ATV and scooter sales; they were followed by Yamaha with 20 percent (15,183), Kawasaki 9.8 percent (7,443) and Suzuki 9.3 percent (7,045).
